Big or Small, Save Them All: The Truth About Breast Cancer and Reconstruction

The panelists of experts will discuss the prevalence of breast cancer today, the advances in treatment, touch on modifiable vs non modifiable risk factors, and segway into the management of high-risk patients (including BRCA carriers) and the role of preventative surgery.  The panelists will also discuss reconstructive options following breast surgery, whether for cancer or prophylactic.

Objectives:

  • The learner will be able to examine the process of breast reconstruction: implants and soft tissue construction.
  • The learner will be able to discuss advancements in breast cancer treatments that have occurred, allowing individualized care.

 


 

Peter T. Hetzler, M.D., FACS has dedicated his practice to breast reconstruction for over twenty-five years. Certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1989, the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1991, and made Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1992.   Dr. Hetzler serves as a commissioner for the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, and is a Past President of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons.  He also serves as an examiner for the oral certification exam of American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Hetzler received his Bachelor of Science with Distinction and Honors from Stanford University in 1976, his MD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1981. He then completed his formal training in General Surgery (1981-1986) and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1986-1988) at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Hetzler continued his comprehensive training in Plastic Surgery by completing an Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in 1989. He retains hospital privileges at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ,  Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ, the Shrewsbury Surgery Center in Shrewsbury, NJ.
