Caring for an Aging Parent – An Individualized Toolkit

Arming the Population to ask the right questions and get the right answers when caring for an aging parent.
There are challenges in each individual setting when caring for an aging parent and knowing what is best for them. There are five scenarios: 1- Primary Care, 2- Hospital Care, 3- Home Care, 4- Nursing Home, 5- Hospice. This lecture will offer insight into what your loved ones face as well as what you face as a care giver and navigating very difficult situations. We will include a multidisciplinary panel discussion with social workers and nurses to help you understand and navigate the 5 most common areas when caring for an aging parent.
Objectives:
- The learner will be able to explain the challenges caring for an aging parent.
- The learner will be able to empathize what the challenging role of a caregiver for an aging parent.
- The learner will be able to discuss the 5 most common scenarios: primary care, hospital care, home care, nursing home, and hospice when making healthcare decisions for an aging parent.
Dr. Landers is the President and CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group, Inc., the nation’s second largest not-for- profit home health care organization. As a certified family doctor and geriatrician, Dr. Landers places a strong emphasis on house calls to the vulnerable elderly and has a specialized interest in geriatric medicine, home health, hospice and palliative care. Dr. Landers is a graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Alliance for Home Health Quality and Innovation and serves on numerous Boards including Partnership for Quality Home Health Care, Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP), and Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA). Dr. Landers has authored several articles on the role of home care in national publications, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medicine. Before joining VNA Health Group, Dr. Landers served as the Director of the Center for Home Care and Community Rehabilitation and Director of Post-Acute Operations for the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. In 2014, Dr. Landers received the NJBiz 40 Under 40 Award, a recognition of New Jersey’s most accomplished young businessmen and women.
