Let’s talk about inflammation.
In Ayurveda, summer is ruled by Pitta—the dosha tied to heat, transformation, and, yep, inflammation.
And one of the first organs to feel the strain? Your liver.
Your liver works hard year-round—filtering toxins, regulating hormones, helping with digestion—but come summer, it’s especially vulnerable to excess heat. That can show up as skin flare-ups, mood swings, headaches, gut issues, or just feeling hotter (and crankier) than you’d like.
Inflammation isn’t always loud. Sometimes it whispers – showing up as irritability, fatigue, or weight that won’t budge. And while it’s your body’s way of protecting you, when it sticks around too long, it starts to cause more harm than help.
So what can you do?
You don’t need a pantry full of supplements (in fact digesting lots of supplements puts extra strain on the liver) or daily ice baths. Ayurveda – India’s traditional system of medicine – offers simple, sustainable ways to cool inflammation from the inside out. Think food, rest, rhythm, and real connection with your body.
Here are 5 easy ways to start.
1. Eat to cool
Ayurveda sees inflammation as excess heat in the system (what we call Pitta gone rogue). And one of the best ways to soothe that heat is with what you eat.
- Try more cooling, soothing foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, and cilantro.
- Ditch the hot sauce and fermented foods (that includes alcohol) for a while. Steer clear of salty, spicy, and sour foods.
- Lean into anti-inflammatory spices like mint, turmeric, coriander, fennel, and cumin.
✨ Pro tip: Sip CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel) throughout the day to gently support digestion and calm inflammation.
2. Move—but don’t burn out
Yes, movement helps inflammation—but not if it leaves you overworked and overheated. If you’re already running hot (physically or emotionally), intense workouts can actually stoke the inflammatory fire. In summer, Ayurveda recommends slower, more intentional movement:
- Early morning walks
- Gentle yoga or stretching
- Swim
This kind of movement supports circulation and detoxification without frying your nervous system. Aside from swimming, avoid exercise in the midday sun during summer.
3. Reset your rhythm
One of the sneakiest causes of inflammation? Chronic stress. And one of the most underrated cures? A consistent daily rhythm.
Ayurveda loves routine because your body loves predictability. Try:
- Eating meals around the same time each day
- Getting to bed by 10 p.m. (yes, really)
- Starting your mornings screen-free and slow
Little things add up. And this kind of rhythm cools internal heat before it boils over.
4. Let yourself rest (actually rest)
We live in a world that glorifies the hustle -but your body rebuilds during rest.
If you’ve been skimping on sleep or trying to “push through,” inflammation may be one of the ways your body is waving a red flag. Sleep is when your tissues repair, your hormones regulate, and your digestion resets.
Wind down early. Shut screens off. Sip golden milk. You don’t need to earn your rest.
5. Support with simple herbs
Ayurveda doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions, but there are a few herbs can work wonders to alleviate inflammation:
- Turmeric – anti-inflammatory MVP
- Aloe vera – cooling and soothing for the gut
- Licorice – calming and nourishing to tissues
You don’t need a pharmacy’s worth of pills. Just start with what feels supportive—and always check with a practitioner before starting new herbs.
Bottom Line?
Inflammation isn’t just something that happens when you sprain your ankle. It’s a full-body conversation – between your diet, your stress, your schedule, and the season you’re in.
And as we head into summer, when heat naturally builds in and around us, that conversation can get louder. These tips? They’re a great place to start cooling that internal fire.
